FINALISTAS 2021 - VOTE y GANE

For two weeks, my art studio was moved to a sailing ship, where I had a chance to collaborate with a group of oceanologists. While on the deck, we conducted many trawling and sampling microplastics sessions in the North Sea. Collected data showed a great amount of microbeads in our water system, which i was visualizing while I was on the deck. I was startled to see how polluted our water basins are, but at the same time this disturbing message unveiled itself in bright and saturated colors. At that moment, contradictory in its full glory was born. To accept that there is a beauty in the ugly is a force that binds us together, because beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and you are a witness of this process now.

I truly believe that sustainability starts by creating awareness within ourselves first and hence by implementing this knowledge in our daily life. This is the only way how we can make right choices while consuming and therefore contributing to a healthier environment. I hope that this unique design will not be just an item in your interior design, but also an interactive piece where people get inspired to start a dialogue about the impact of microplastics on our environment. This approach can stimulate to create an awareness within your household, and at the same time it has a potential to spread a message outside your own context in a subtitle and beautiful way. You as a customer will not only consume a high quality product but also a genuine piece of art, a thought, scientific research data and a sweet remembrance to keep our habitat clean!

Twee weken lang werd mijn atelier verplaatst naar een zeilschip, waar ik de kans kreeg om samen te werken met een groep oceanologen. Terwijl we aan dek waren, hebben we veel trawlvisserij- en bemonsteringssessies met microplastics in de Noordzee uitgevoerd. Verzamelde gegevens toonden een grote hoeveelheid microkorrels in ons watersysteem, die ik visualiseerde terwijl ik op het dek was. Ik schrok toen ik zag hoe vervuild onze waterbassins zijn, maar tegelijkertijd onthulde deze verontrustende boodschap zich in heldere en verzadigde kleuren. Op dat moment werd de contradictie in volle glorie geboren. Accepteren dat er schoonheid in het lelijke zit, is een kracht die ons samenbindt, want schoonheid is in the eye of the beholder - en u bent nu de getuige van dit proces.

Ik geloof dat duurzaamheid begint bij het creëren van bewustwording bij onszelf en daarna met het implementeren van deze kennis in ons dagelijks leven.
